How wonderful that we have a day dedicated to moms! Today I’m celebrating my favorite movie moms. It’s by no means an exhaustive list but if I had to pick just 5 these are it.
1. Elaine Miller Almost Famous – Frances Mcdormand

She can turn a professional rock and roller into a stuttering school boy in a 30 second phone call. Elaine’s fierce love is matched by her faith in her son’s ability to navigate a major rock tour before he’s even older enough to drink. I think Almost Famous is secretly her movie – even with her off screen her positive influence on her son is ever present.
2. Peg Boggs - Edward Scissorhands - Dianne Wiest

She’s a hardworking Avon lady who can’t leave Edward orphaned and alone in his castle. Taking the huge risk of bringing him into her family and community, she gives Edward the kind of love and acceptance he’s never had before. My favorite scene is when she gives him a makeover - her attempts to cover his scars without ever sending the message that there's something wrong with him says everything about her.
3. Mrs. Jumbo - Dumbo - voiced by Verna Felton

To her Dumbo, the elephant with over-sized ears, is as perfect as can be. She teaches him to always embrace who he is, fights off his bullies, and love what makes him different. With her love and support, he literally can fly.
4. Mrs Gump - Forrest Gump – Sally Field

Mrs. Gump is the heart and soul of this film. She literally does anything to insure a great future for her son and always sees his greatness no matter what anyone says about him. With that love he feels safe to go out into the world and be exactly who he is. She’s unsentimental, fierce, practical while still inspiring in him a sense that life is extraordinary. And the pure way Forest loves his mamma makes you want to hug your own Mom a little closer.
5. Sarah Connor – Terminator 2 – Linda Hamilton

Sarah Connor is always on the top list of the most badass mother’s of all time and this list would be incomplete without her. She goes from a timid mouse to a chiseled ferocious warrior completely up to the task of what it’s going to take to save her son. She’s also one of the first onscreen moms who knows how to wield a machine gun if she has to, looks like she stepped out of Special ops training, and redefines the collective image of motherhood forever. Your fellow badass women bow at your feet, Ms. Connor.
